Woman is startled when her hacked camera emits voice

Connected objects pose a great risk to users. Unfortunately, many people have already fallen victim to hackers because of such exposure. An example of this is when a Dutch woman noticed that her security camera was being remotely controlled.

Rilana Hamer was at her house when she began to hear sounds coming from the living room. Soon she noticed that her connected camera was moving and making sounds.

Initially, the camera began to speak in French. "Bonjour, madam. Tout bien avec vous?" ("Good morning, ma'am. How are you?") said the voice behind the camera. Afterwards, the language changed to Spanish: "Hola, señorita".

The woman, with the fright, ended up screaming at the camera, and realized that unplugging it would be the best solution at that moment.

The incident was reported on his Facebook account. In the post, she said that she acquired the equipment at the Action store chain, which sells low-cost, good quality products. The purpose of the acquisition was to use the camera to remotely monitor your dog while he was away from home.

"Just plug it into Wi-Fi and plug it in. You can operate the camera on your cell phone and hear what's going on in your house. It was perfect," she said in the post.

Action received the product back and said it is investigating what really happened. The company believes in two possibilities: a failure of the camera itself or the misuse of the password or the Wi-Fi network.
