New old Orkut appears on the web, but be careful with your data

On Wednesday (12), many internet users were intrigued by the emergence of a replica of Orkut. It is worth mentioning that the social network was deactivated three years ago and now it would have appeared with a new address and the classic layout.

According to Google, which owned the original Orkut, the social network remains disabled, as well as the collection of communities that has also been deleted from the internet.

      "New" orkut screen

The new address of the site, Orkut.li, as it turns out, is a replica of the original Orkut. The domain in question has no connection with Google, however, if a quick lookup is made in the IP address books, it is possible to see that the registration was made in 2006 and belongs to a person from São Paulo.

There is no way to know where the website server is hosted, however, the service is provided by the CloudFlare caching platform. Anyone who tries to access the site through some browsers, such as Chrome or Safari, will come across a security alert on the screen indicating that the site may be a phishing attempt.

Google Chrome warns of the danger of accessing the site

For those who want to use the new site, it is necessary to register, including a personal e-mail address. Many people speculate that this would be a way to collect emails from possible victims, but so far, nothing confirmed.

The news about the appearance of the replica of the legendary Orkut quickly circulated on the internet, so the following warning was included on the social network: "orkut.li is not linked to Google. Create a new account to access it. Don't worry, our site does not contain viruses and will not steal your data. Our goal is to help you meet new people and build new friendships".

The Orkut.li address uses the HTTPS protocol, which guarantees the exchange of information between client and server. Therefore, there is no way to confirm whether the intention of the social network is legitimate or just a bait to attract the most unsuspecting.

After registering, users will be able to enjoy basic functions of traditional Orkut, such as profile descriptions, messages, testimonials and even communities.
