AOL Instant Messenger comes to an end

Some people may never have used AOL Instant Messenger, but it was one of the forerunners of the famous messengers we know today. The software was launched in 1997 by the provider AOL, being available for the three main platforms in the market (Windows, LINUX and macOS. The iconic messenger, even with an outdated interface, still had a large number of users.

However, this Friday (15), the service came to an end. AOL, currently managed by Oath, a division of operator Verizon, has forever silenced the service. The shutdown had already been announced on October 6, even so, many users lamented the end of the platform.

Several people are even using Twitter, through the hashtag #AIMemories to tell unforgettable stories they had thanks to the messenger.

Michael Abers, vice president of products at Oath, said the shutdown of AIM was due to the way people communicate over the internet these days. Albers added that he "looks forward to continuing to build the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products."
