This week, Facebook and Globenet revealed that they are starting the construction of a new submarine cable with the aim of improving connectivity between Spain and Argentina. Named Malbec, the cable is 2.500 kilometers long and should start operating in 2020.
Globenet says that Malbec will have three connection points with the surface, with the first in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the second in Praia Grande (SP) and the third located in Toninas, on the Argentine coast.
The cable will be responsible for providing a homogeneous connection between the Southern Cone of South America and the United States. Malbec is also the first submarine route to reach the Argentine coast since 2001.
The companies involved did not disclose the capacity of the cable. In any case, it will have six optical fiber pairs, that is, twice as much as Argentina's international connection capacity.
"Argentina deserves state-of-the-art infrastructure to meet the urgent demands of the coming years. This project is a testament to our capabilities, expertise and commitment to the region in which we have been operating for 15 years," said Eduardo Falzoni, CEO of Globenet.
Globenet is expected to sell the cable capacity to operators, OTTs and cloud service providers. To top it off, the company expects the percentage of Argentines with internet access to grow from 79% to 95%.
