Europe reveals concern about 5G network

The European Commission is recommending that EU member countries work together to address potential security risks in next-generation 5G networks.

It is worth mentioning that the United States has been harshly critical of Huawei, and has pressured European allies to abandon the company from their networks. The current report only mentions that EU countries create 5G risk assessments, which are expected to be used to develop an EU-wide assessment. Thus, the decision to exclude companies such as Huawei will be at the discretion of each country.

"5G technology will transform our economy and society and open up enormous opportunities for people and businesses," European Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip said in a statement. "But we cannot accept this happening without full security. Therefore, it is essential that 5G infrastructures in the EU are resilient and fully protected from technical or legal backdoors."

The US government has said Chinese giant Huawei is a potential security threat, considering it could be manipulated by the US government for spying. The US has already banned the use of company equipment by the federal government.

The current recommendations add a new obstacle to the US campaign. Earlier this month, US officials began sharing some information with Germany if the country allowed Huawei on its 5G networks.

Even with the efforts of the United States, not all countries are convinced. Huawei itself said the country has not produced public evidence of wrongdoing. The company has already denied being a threat to national security.
