Google CEO says the company's search engine is far from reaching China

Sundar Pichai, in a meeting this week with employees at the company's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., said Google is "still not close to launching its search engine in China," even though the company is designing something aimed at the country.

Pichai's comment is related to recent news that Google is developing a new China-focused search engine that would allow the Chinese government to censor citizens' results. The project, dubbed "Dragonfly," prompted more than XNUMX company employees to protest state-sponsored censorship.

"Many of us believe that the Dragonfly [project] poses a threat to freedom of expression and global political dissent, violating our principles related to artificial intelligence," two Google employees wrote at the time who issued the manifesto via email.

It is worth mentioning that this is the second protest initiated by employees against Google projects in a few months. Earlier this year, the subject was the Maven Project that Google was developing with the US government, which led to several employees even resigning. The new movement ended up garnering over a thousand signatures on an open letter.

Through the document, officials request that Google be more transparent and create an ethical review process for Dragonfly. Google left China eight years ago for not agreeing with the country's government regarding censorship of its technology. Now, however, it is trying to get back to the Chinese market in some other way.

Let's see what the future holds for the company, as China is not expected to compromise on its decisions.
