Google Fit will measure heart rate and breathing through the phone's camera

Starting in March, the Google Fit app will receive an update with a feature capable of measuring heart rate and monitoring the user's breathing. The most curious thing about this functionality is that the feature will only work using the smartphone's camera, being implemented first in models of the Pixel line, manufactured by Google itself, but with the future objective of expanding to other smartphones that use the Android system.

To track heart rate, the user must use the smartphone camera to analyze the color of the fingers, applying a technique that uses color changes, based on scientific research photoplethysmography (PPG), where it is practically impossible to be perceived with the naked eye. .

To take advantage of the function in terms of breathing, the user must use the cell phone's front camera to frame the upper body and face. From there, the application system will be able to measure and determine the breathing rate based on the movement of the chest when breathing in and out. After the measurement, both functions allow saving the record so that the user can follow possible variations over time.
