Google Photos passes the 1 billion user mark

After four years of its launch, the photo app, Google Photos, has reached the number of one billion users according to Fast Company. The software developed for organizing and editing images was the new product created by Google. The app is part of the package that comes with the Android operating system, along with applications such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps.

Unlike other Google services, Google Photos reached a lot of users in a short period. In a mere five-month window, the platform managed to accumulate the number of 100 million monthly users and reached the 500 million mark two years after its launch.

Even though Google Photos is part of the set of apps pre-installed on devices that have the Android OS, the app's success is not guaranteed. Initially it emerged from an offshoot of Google+, the project that became one of Google's biggest fiascos that ended its activities earlier this year. However, according to Fast Company, the fact that Google Photos is a standalone app provided a chance for the software to take the best part of Google+ without being affected by the less popular features of the late social network.
