Wi-Fi 7 is coming: learn all about the new technology

According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization responsible for certifying Wi-Fi standards, the IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) standard is still under development. According to the article "Current Status and Directions of IEEE 802.11be, the Future Wi-Fi 7", published in the magazine/newspaper "IEEE Access", in 2019 the development of the new Wi-Fi standard started with Task Group BE (TGbe) , but that the 802.11 Working Group (802.11 Working Group, translated into Spanish) provided information on key innovations in the technology.

The biggest changes in Wi-Fi 7 include a 2x increase in bandwidth used and an increase in the number of spatial streams. These and other improvements have brought the new standard to a data transfer rate of up to 40 Gbps.

    Padrão IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7)

With the completion of Wi-Fi 6 development in May 2018, the 802.11 Working Group began developing new features for bands between 1 and 7,125 GHz. A year later, in March 2019, it was defined that the new Wi-Fi standard would be called IEEE 802.11be or Wi-Fi 7. The plan is that the final version of Wi-Fi 7 will be presented in early 2024. improvements that Wi-Fi 7 should bring are: 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM, OFDMA technology enhancements and multi-link.

    320 MHz channels

Wi-Fi 7 will double the bandwidth across the 6 GHz frequency, where multiple channels are available. So far, it is known that 320 MHz channels will be used and the use of two 160 MHz channels together not adjacent to the 80 + 80 MHz channels of the 11ac. In addition, the technology will allow 240/160 + 80 MHz channels.

    4K-QAM (4096-QAM)

With each increase that occurs in the constellation, the gain is smaller and smaller. Even though implementing 256-QAM in 802.ac (Wi-Fi 5) we achieved a 33% gain compared to 64-QAM in 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4), Wi-Fi 6 (802.ax ), with 1024-QAM, achieved a gain of 25%. At the same time, in addition to further decreasing the gain, the 4096-QAM exhibits a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of approximately 40 dB. That is, to have a good signal transmission on Wi-Fi 7, it will be necessary to use Access Points and Wi-Fi Routers very close to the client devices (cell phones, notebooks, tablets).

    enhanced OFDMA

In the IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) standard, OFDMA uses the same scheduling approach as in 11ax. However, now there will be a new degree of freedom. With the new technology, it will be possible to assign multiple RUs to an STA.

    MU-MIMO

With 11be, MU-MIMO will have a total of 16 SSs across all programmed STAs, doubling throughput.

Qualcomm is already developing chips for Wi-Fi 7

In July 2021, it was reported that Qualcomm, Broadcom and MediaTek are already developing chips with the next standard, Wi-Fi 7. According to Qualcomm, the network speed will be doubled compared to Wi-fi 6. , the new standard will be able to combine multiple frequency spectrums and provide superior quality.

MediaTek will showcase Wi-Fi 7 at CES 2022

During a developer meeting a few weeks ago, MediaTek's vice president of product marketing, James Chen, spoke about the benefits of the new technology, especially for gamers who will suffer from less latency, as well as exposing the company's planning for the development of this new technology.

As far as is known, during CES 2022, the Taiwanese company should present a type of project that simulates the new technology, but for now there is no specific date for the official launch of Wi-Fi 7. The company assured that the development still it is "very early on". The idea is that this will start to be implemented around the second quarter of 2022. But that depends on the Wi-Fi Alliance, the non-profit organization responsible for the wireless standard.

Regarding CES 2022, it is worth noting that it is the largest technology fair in the world, which will take place between January 5th and 8th in Las Vegas (United States), returning to be held in person after the lockdowns caused by the pandemic.
