The internet is essential nowadays, however, not all places on the planet have the attraction. Now, a billion-dollar project could change this situation, as it intends to make internet available in all corners of the globe.

OneWeb launched six of its first satellites into space on Wednesday (27). The material was launched aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket and the main task is to guarantee the necessary frequencies to enable data transmission at high connection speeds.

According to Greg Wyler, executive president of OneWeb, the company intends to launch nearly 2 satellites, but says that 600 of them will be enough in this first phase of the project. The project has several investors, including Virgin Group, SoftBank, Airbus, Qualcomm and Coca-Cola.

OneWeb has signed contracts with Roscosmos and Arianespace for 21 commercial launches of 672 satellites using Soyuz rockets, with nearly $1 billion involved.

OneWeb CEO Adrian Steckel said the project provides internet coverage for schools and governments in locations that are more isolated, in remote areas, where fiber is of high value or even if it is not viable.

Now, after the launch, the company intends to send the remaining satellites in batches of 36 units using Soyuz rockets.
